GATE 2021 CE (CE1) – Question 49

Concrete Structures · Design and detailing of beams and slabs · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A cantilever prestressed beam has L=1.5 m, b=200 mm, d=300 mm and a straight 50 kN tendon 50 mm below its top. A downward 5 kN tip load acts. Find resultant stress at the fixed-end top point Q in MPa (integer).

Correct answer: 0 to 0

Explanation

The tendon eccentricity is 150−50=100 mm. Direct compression is 50000/60000=0.83333 MPa and top compression from prestress bending is $Pe/Z=50000(100)/3000000=1.66667$ MPa. The tip load gives top tension $PL/Z=5000(1500)/3000000=2.5$ MPa. These cancel: **resultant stress=0 MPa**.
