GATE 2021 CE (CE1) – Question 50

Steel Structures · Connections: simple, eccentric, beam-column · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A six-bolt bracket carries 60 kN downward at eccentricity 100 mm. Bolts are in two columns x=±40 mm and three rows y=−30,0,30 mm. R is the middle bolt of the right column. Find resultant force in R in kN to one decimal.

Correct answer: 27 to 29

Explanation

Direct shear is 60/6=10 kN per bolt. The group polar sum is $\sum r_i^2=6(40^2)+4(30^2)=13200$ mm². Moment is 6000 kN·mm, giving secondary shear at R of $6000(40)/13200=18.1818$ kN. It is downward at the right-hand bolt and adds to direct shear, giving **28.2 kN**.
