GATE 2020 ME (ME1) – Question 60

Fluid Mechanics · Bernoulli's equation and fluid acceleration · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Air discharges steadily through a horizontal nozzle onto a stationary vertical plate as shown. Inlet and outlet areas are 0.1 and 0.02 m²; air density is constant at 1.2 kg/m³. Inlet gauge pressure is 0.36 kPa. Find gauge pressure at plate point O (kPa), to two decimals.

Correct answer: .37 to .45

Explanation

Continuity gives Vi=0.2Vo. Bernoulli to the atmospheric outlet gives $360=\rho V_o^2(1-0.2^2)/2$, so Vo²=625. At the stagnation point, velocity becomes zero and $p_O=\rho V_o^2/2=375$ Pa=0.375 kPa, rounded to **0.38 kPa**.
