GATE 2019 ME (ME1) – Question 33

Fluid Mechanics · Bernoulli's equation and fluid acceleration · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Water velocity is $\vec V=(4/t+x+y)\hat j$ m/s, where t > 0 is in seconds and x,y in metres. Find total acceleration magnitude at (x,y) = (1,1), t = 2 s (m/s²).

Correct answer: 3 to 3

Explanation

Only the y velocity v is nonzero. Material acceleration is $a_y=\partial v/\partial t+v\partial v/\partial y=-4/t^2+(4/t+x+y)$. At the specified point v=4 and local acceleration=−1, so total acceleration is **3 m/s²**. The convective contribution cannot be omitted.
