GATE 2019 ME (ME1) – Question 29

Engineering Mechanics · Friction and its applications: belts, brakes, clutches, screw jack, wedge · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A 10 kg block rests on a horizontal floor. Static-friction coefficient is 0.2 and g = 9.81 m/s². A horizontal 10 N force acts as shown. Find friction force magnitude (N).

Correct answer: 10 to 10

Explanation

Limiting static friction is $\mu_smg=0.2(10)(9.81)=19.62$ N. The 10 N pull is below this limit. The block stays at rest and friction balances the applied force: **10 N**.
