GATE 2019 CE (CE1) – Question 16
An element has biaxial tensile normal strains 0.0030 and 0.0020. Find the normal strain on a plane of maximum shear strain.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: (C) 0.0025
Explanation
The stated biaxial tensile strains are principal strains. On a maximum-shear plane, at 45° to their directions, normal strain equals their mean: $(0.0030+0.0020)/2=$ **0.0025, C**. Their difference determines maximum engineering shear strain.
