GATE 2019 CE (CE1) – Question 29

Solid Mechanics · Simple bending theory, flexural and shear stresses, shear centre · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A rectangular plain-concrete beam of overall depth 500 mm develops equal-magnitude compressive and tensile strains $2.5\times10^{-4}$ at opposite extreme fibres. Find curvature (m⁻¹), to three decimal places.

Correct answer: .001 to .001

Explanation

Curvature equals extreme-fibre strain difference divided by their separation: $$\kappa=\frac{2.5\times10^{-4}-(-2.5\times10^{-4})}{0.500}=0.001\ \mathrm{m^{-1}}.$$ Both magnitudes contribute because their signs are opposite.
