A rolled I-section rests on a 75 mm wide end bearing plate as shown. Flange thickness is 20 mm, web thickness 8 mm, root radius 10 mm, yield stress 250 MPa and material partial safety factor 1.10. Under IS 800:2007, find web bearing strength (kN), to two decimal places.

Correct answer: 272.60 to 272.80
Explanation
End-bearing effective length is $75+2.5(t_f+r)=75+2.5(20+10)=150$ mm. Web bearing resistance is $150(8)(250)/1.10=272727.3$ N, or **272.73 kN**.
