An ISHB 350 steel column of mass 72.4 kg/m transfers factored axial load 2000 kN to an M20 concrete pedestal through a square base plate. Concrete bearing strength is $0.45f_{ck}$. Neglect base-plate and column self-weight. Under the limit-state method, the plate side to provide is ______.

Correct answer: (D) 48 cm

Explanation

Concrete bearing strength is $0.45(20)=9$ N/mm². Required area is $2000000/9=222222$ mm², giving square side 471.4 mm = 47.14 cm. Choose the next adequate size, 48 cm (D).
