Correct answer: (C) Diagram C

Explanation

n-BuLi removes the acidic dithiane methine proton to form an acyl-anion equivalent. It adds conjugatively to vinyl phenyl sulfoxide, retaining the sulfoxide at the end of the new two-carbon chain: X in C. Heating eliminates sulfenic acid to form the vinyl dithiane. HgCl2/CdCO3 in water unmasks the dithiane as a ketone, giving methyl vinyl ketone.

Thus **X and Y are C**.
