GATE 2024 IN – Question 28

Measurements · Errors and uncertainty · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A 20 kΩ resistor is measured six consecutive times using an LCR meter. The first five readings are 19, 18, 23, 21, and 17 kΩ. If the mean equals the true resistance, the last reading is ______ kΩ (nearest integer).

Correct answer: 22 to 22

Explanation

Six readings with mean 20 kΩ must sum to 120 kΩ. The first five sum to $19+18+23+21+17=98$ kΩ.

Thus the missing reading is $120-98=\boxed{22}$ kΩ.
