GATE 2024 IN – Question 58

Digital Electronics · ADC and DAC · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An ADC has full-scale voltage 1.4 V, resolution 200 mV, and binary output. It samples a 500 MHz bandwidth signal at the Nyquist rate. A parallel-to-serial converter converts each parallel output to a serial bit stream. Its output data rate is ______ Gbps (nearest integer).

Correct answer: 3 to 3

Explanation

Codes from 0 to 1.4 V in 0.2 V increments give eight levels, requiring $\log_2 8=3$ bits/sample. Nyquist sampling requires $2(500\ \mathrm{MHz})=1$ Gsample/s. Serial bit rate is $3\times1=\boxed3$ Gbps.
