GATE 2023 MT – Question 57

Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes · Fluid flow and momentum transfer · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The chimney shown must provide natural draft $P_0-P_1=1.0133\times10^3$ Pa between furnace and chimney bottom. Air and flue-gas densities are constant with height; their difference is 0.5 kg m$^{-3}$. Neglect frictional losses and kinetic-energy differences between chimney bottom and top. For $g=9.81$ m s$^{-2}$, the minimum height $h$ is ______ m (nearest integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 200 to 210

Explanation

Natural draft is $\Delta P=gh(\rho_{air}-\rho_{flue})$.

Thus $h=1013.3/(9.81\times0.5)=206.585$ m. With the stipulated losses neglected, the nearest-integer answer is **207 m**.
