The GATE Grind

GATE 2018 ME (ME1) – Question 21

Engineering Materials · Engineering and true stress-strain diagrams · 1 mark · Multiple choice

Beyond initial yield in a linearly hardening plastic material, true stress ______.

  1. increases linearly with true strain
  2. decreases linearly with true strain
  3. first increases linearly then decreases linearly with true strain
  4. remains constant

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) increases linearly with true strain

Explanation

Linear plastic hardening means a positive constant slope in the post-yield stress–strain relation, for example $\sigma=\sigma_y+H\epsilon_p$, H > 0. True stress therefore increases linearly under this idealization (A).
