GATE 2018 ME (ME1) – Question 58

Engineering Materials · Engineering and true stress-strain diagrams · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The true stress–true strain curve shown loads a strain-hardening material to A at 500 MPa and strain 0.5, then unloads to B at 100 MPa. With E = 200 GPa, natural strain at B, to three decimals, is ______.

Correct answer: 0.498 to 0.498

Explanation

Elastic unloading recovers strain $(500-100)/200000=0.002$. Subtract from the initial total strain 0.5: $\epsilon_B=0.498$. Plastic strain remains after unloading.
