GATE 2018 ME (ME1) – Question 32

Fluid Mechanics · Control-volume analysis of mass, momentum and energy · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A plate of width L = 1 m moves towards a wall at U = 0.01 m/s, squeezing fluid out as shown. Assume two-dimensional incompressible flow, with the plate remaining parallel to the wall. At the shown 0.1 m gap, average outlet speed, to three decimals, is ______ m/s.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 0.045 to 0.055

Explanation

Per unit depth, squeezed volume rate is UL and the two exits carry $2du_{avg}$. Thus $u_{avg}=UL/(2d)=0.01(1)/(2\times0.1)=0.050$ m/s.
