GATE 2018 CE (CE2) – Question 48

Solid Mechanics · Transformation of stress, Mohr circle · 2 marks · Numerical answer

An 8 m simply supported elastic beam has rectangular cross section 100 mm × 200 mm and a 10 kN/m UDL over its entire span. The maximum principal stress at the extreme compression edge of the cross section 2 m from a support, to two decimals, is ______ MPa.

Correct answer: 0.0 to 0.0

Explanation

At 2 m from a support, moment is $40(2)-10(2^2)/2=60$ kN m. At the extreme compression fibre, bending stress is −90 MPa and transverse shear is zero. Plane-stress principal values are −90 and 0 MPa. The maximum algebraic principal stress is therefore 0.00 MPa.
