GATE 2018 CE (CE2) – Question 60
A brick kiln completely burns coal containing 2% sulfur at 30 kg/min. Ash retains 6% of the sulfur initially fed. Atomic weights S, H, O are 32, 1, 16 g/mol. Annual SO₂ emissions, to two decimals, are ______ tonnes/year.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 590.00 to 595.00
Explanation
Sulfur feed is $30(0.02)=0.6$ kg/min. Emitted sulfur is $0.94(0.6)=0.564$ kg/min. Oxidation doubles mass because SO₂/S has mass ratio 64/32, giving 1.128 kg/min SO₂. For 365 days, annual emission is $1.128(60)(24)(365)/1000=592.88$ tonnes.
