Explanation
The right segment carries tensile force F; the left carries signed force F−P. Total displacement is(F−P)L/(3EA)+FL/(EA). Setting it to zero and multiplying by3EA/L gives F−P+3F=0. Hence **P/F=4**; the left segment compresses while the right extends.
