GATE 2016 ME (ME2) – Question 44

Engineering Mechanics · Plane trusses and frames · 2 marks · Numerical answer

In the figure, the load P = 1 N, length L = 1 m, Young’s modulus E = 70 GPa, and the cross-section of the links is a square with dimension 10 mm × 10 mm. All joints are pin joints. The stress (in Pa) in the link AB is ___________ (Indicate compressive stress by a negative sign and tensile stress by a positive sign.)

Correct answer: -1 to 1

Explanation

At joint B the applied load is exactly collinear with link BC and opposite its tensile-force direction. BC alone can balance the applied force. Vertical link AB is the third, non-collinear member at that joint and must have zero axial force. Therefore its stress is **0Pa**, independently of E and area.
