GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 60

Casting, Forming and Joining Processes · Bulk forming and sheet forming, estimation of load · 2 marks · Numerical answer

In a sheet metal of 2 mm thickness a hole of 10 mm diameter needs to be punched. The yield strength in tension of the sheet material is 100 MPa and its ultimate shear strength is 80 MPa. The force required to punch the hole (in kN) is __________

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 4.9 to 5.1

Explanation

The material shears along the hole perimeter through the sheet thickness. Shear area isπdt=π×10×2mm². Multiplying by ultimate shear strength80N/mm² gives5026.55N, or **5.02655kN**. The tensile yield strength is not the punching failure stress.
