GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 61

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Cutting tool materials, tool life and wear, economics of machining · 2 marks · Numerical answer

In a single point turning operation with cemented carbide tool and steel work piece, it is found that the Taylor’s exponent is 0.25. If the cutting speed is reduced by 50% then the tool life changes by ______ times.

Correct answer: 14 to 18

Explanation

Taylor’s relation is VTⁿ=C. Therefore T₂/T₁=(V₁/V₂)^(1/n)=2^(1/0.25)=**16**. This is a sixteenfold final tool life, corresponding to an increase of fifteen initial lives; the question asks the multiplicative factor.
