GATE 2019 ME (ME1) – Question 63

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Cutting tool materials, tool life and wear, economics of machining · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Taylor’s tool-life equation is $VT^n=C$, with V in m/min and T in min. Tool X has n = 0.3, C = 60; tool Y has n = 0.6, C = 90. Find the cutting speed giving equal tool life (m/min), to one decimal place.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 38 to 42

Explanation

Divide $VT^{0.6}=90$ by $VT^{0.3}=60$: $T^{0.3}=1.5$. Substitution gives $V=60/1.5=\mathbf{40.0}$ m/min.
