GATE 2017 ME (ME1) – Question 63

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Cutting tool materials, tool life and wear, economics of machining · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 200 mm long block is slab milled with a 34 mm diameter cutter at depth of cut 2 mm and table feed 18 mm/min. Approach and overtravel are equal. Find minimum machining time per pass in minutes.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 11.95 to 12.05

Explanation

The geometric approach distance is $a=\sqrt{Dd-d^2}=\sqrt{34(2)-2^2}=8$ mm. Equal overtravel adds another 8 mm, so total table movement is $200+8+8=216$ mm. At feed 18 mm/min, time is $216/18=12$ minutes. Ignoring approach and overtravel would understate the required time.
