GATE 2021 PI – Question 56
Manufacturing Processes II · Machining · 2 marks · Numerical answer
Orthogonal machining of mild steel uses rake 15°, uncut chip thickness 0.9 mm and chip thickness 1.8 mm. Find shear angle in degrees to one decimal.

Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: 28.0 to 30.0
Explanation
Chip ratio is r = 0.9/1.8 = 0.5. $\tan\phi=r\cos\alpha/(1-r\sin\alpha)=0.5\cos15^\circ/(1-0.5\sin15^\circ)$. This gives **φ ≈ 29.0°**.
