GATE 2017 ME (ME1) – Question 29

Machine Design · Gears and belt drives · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The riveted lap joint shown carries tension $F$. Rivet diameter is $d$, plate width is $W$ and maximum permissible tensile stress is $S_f$. Assuming identical plates, what minimum plate thickness prevents tensile failure?

  1. $F/[S_f(W-2d)]$
  2. $F/(S_fW)$
  3. $F/[S_f(W-d)]$
  4. $2F/(S_fW)$

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) $F/[S_f(W-2d)]$

Explanation

The critical transverse net section passes through the two rivet holes shown. Its remaining width is $W-2d$, so its tensile area is $t(W-2d)$. Requiring $F/[t(W-2d)]\leq S_f$ gives $t_{min}=F/[S_f(W-2d)]$, A. This check is for plate tension; rivet shear and bearing are separate failure modes.
