GATE 2024 EE – Question 63

Power Electronics · Single-phase and three-phase voltage and current source inverters, sinusoidal pulse width modulation · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A single-phase full bridge voltage source inverter (VSI) feeds a purely inductive load. The inverter output voltage is a square wave in $180^\circ$ conduction mode. The fundamental frequency of the output voltage is 50 Hz. If the DC input voltage of the inverter is 100 V and the value of the load inductance is 20 mH, the peak-to-peak load current in amperes is __________ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 50

Explanation

The load sees $\pm100$ V, each lasting half a period $=10$ ms. For a purely inductive load the current ramps linearly: $\Delta i=\dfrac{V\,t}{L}=\dfrac{100\times10\times10^{-3}}{20\times10^{-3}}=50$ A, which is the peak-to-peak value.
