GATE 2017 EE (EE2) – Question 57

Electrical and Electronic Measurements · Instrument transformers, Digital voltmeters and multi-meters, Phase, Time and Frequency measurement · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 10½-digit timer-counter has a 100 MHz base clock. The same numerical reading occurs in frequency mode with 1 s gating and in period mode on the ×10 ns scale. The unknown input frequency in Hz is ________.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 10000 to 10000

Explanation

In frequency mode the counter counts f input cycles during a one-second gate, giving numerical reading f.

The base clock period is 10 ns. In period mode the reading is the number of those ticks in an input period: $N=(1/f)/(10^{-8})=10^8/f$.

Equating readings gives $f^2=10^8$, so the positive frequency is **10000 Hz**.
