GATE 2015 EE (EE2) – Question 8

General Aptitude · Quantitative Aptitude: Data Interpretation, Arithmetic and Number Computation · 2 marks · Numerical answer

For distinct integers p,q,r,s define f as their maximum and g as their minimum. Define h as the remainder when the larger of pq and rs is divided by the smaller. Also fgh=f×g×h. The same maximum/minimum operations apply to two-variable functions. Find $fg(h(2,5,7,3),4,6,8)$.

Correct answer: 8

Explanation

First compute h(2,5,7,3). The products are 2×5=10 and 7×3=21, so the remainder of 21 divided by 10 is 1.

The outer list is therefore (1,4,6,8). Its maximum is 8 and minimum is 1. Since fg denotes their product, the requested value is **8×1=8**. The outer expression is fg, not fgh, so no second remainder is multiplied in.
