GATE 2015 EE (EE2) – Question 17
Electrical and Electronic Measurements · Oscilloscopes, Error analysis · 1 mark · Numerical answer
The capacitive divider shown measures a 100 kV rms, 50 Hz bus. C1=1 μF and C2=9 μF each have ±10% tolerance. The maximum rms Vout in kV is ________.

Correct answer: 11.75 to 12.25
Explanation
For capacitors in series, Vout across C2 is Vbus C1/(C1+C2). This increases with C1 and decreases with C2.
The largest output therefore uses C1=1.1 μF and C2=8.1 μF. Then Vout=100×1.1/(1.1+8.1)=**11.9565 kV**, within 11.75–12.25.
