GATE 2015 EC – Question 22

Analog Circuits · Diode Circuits · 1 mark · Numerical answer

In the circuit shown below, the Zener diode is ideal and the Zener voltage is 6 V. The output voltage $V_o$ (in volts) is ________.

A 10 V source feeds a $1\ \text{k}\Omega$ series resistor. A Zener diode is connected across the output, in parallel with a $1\ \text{k}\Omega$ load on which $V_o$ is measured.

Correct answer: 5

Explanation

If the Zener is not conducting, the two $1\ \text{k}\Omega$ resistors divide the 10 V equally, giving 5 V across the load. This is below the 6 V Zener voltage, so the Zener stays off and $V_o = 5$ V.
