GATE 2022 ME (ME1) – Question 59

Production Planning and Control · Aggregate production planning, scheduling and material requirement planning · 2 marks · Numerical answer

The product structure diagram shows the number of different components required at each level to produce one unit of the final product P. If there are 50 units of on-hand inventory of component A, the number of additional units of component A needed to produce 10 units of product P is __________ (in integer).

a product structure tree. Level 0: P (1). Level 1: A (4) and B (2). Level 2, under B: C (1) and D (3). Level 3, under D: A (2).

Correct answer: 110

Explanation

Per unit of P, component A is needed directly at level 1: 4 units. Through B: each P needs 2 B, each B needs 3 D, and each D needs 2 A, so $2 \times 3 \times 2 = 12$ units of A. The total is $4 + 12 = 16$ units of A per P. For 10 units of P, 160 A are needed. With 50 on hand, the additional requirement is $160 - 50 = 110$.
