GATE 2021 ME (ME1) – Question 17

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Machining operations, machine tools, cutting tools and tool geometry · 1 mark · Multiple choice

In a machining operation, if a cutting tool traces the workpiece such that the directrix is perpendicular to the plane of the generatrix as shown in figure, the surface generated is

Circular generatrix translated along a straight directrix perpendicular to its plane. See the attached source image.
  1. Plane
  2. Cylindrical
  3. Spherical
  4. A surface of revolution

Correct answer: (B) Cylindrical

Explanation

Translate the circular generatrix along the straight directrix normal to its plane. Every cross-section remains the same circle.

The resulting surface is a **cylinder (B)**. A sphere requires the cross-sectional radius to change along the axis.
