Mechanics of Materials · Stress, strain and elastic constants · 1 mark · Multiple choice

The loading and unloading response of a metal is shown in the figure. The elastic and plastic strains corresponding to 200 MPa stress, respectively, are

Stress–strain loading and unloading graph: total strain 0.03 at 200 MPa, with zero-stress unloading intercept 0.01. See the attached source image.
  1. 0.01 and 0.01
  2. 0.02 and 0.01

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) 0.02 and 0.01

Explanation

Total strain at 200 MPa is 0.03. Unloading returns to zero stress at strain 0.01, which is the unrecovered plastic strain.

Recovered elastic strain is 0.03−0.01=0.02. Hence **elastic 0.02, plastic 0.01 (B)**.
