The GATE Grind

GATE 2021 ME (ME2) – Question 35

Mechanics of Materials · Stress, strain and elastic constants · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A steel cubic block of side 200 mm is subjected to hydrostatic pressure of 250 N/mm². The elastic modulus is $2\times10^5$ N/mm² and Poisson ratio is 0.3 for steel. The side of the block is reduced by _____ mm (round off to two decimal places).

Correct answer: 0.09 to 0.11

Explanation

Each principal stress is−p. Generalized Hooke’s law gives strain along any side $\varepsilon=[-p-\nu(-p-p)]/E=-p(1-2\nu)/E$.

Reduction magnitude is 200×250×0.4/(2×10⁵)=**0.10 mm**. Hydrostatic stress changes volume but produces no distortion.
