The GATE Grind

GATE 2019 ME (ME2) – Question 16

Mechanics of Materials · Stress, strain and elastic constants · 1 mark · Multiple choice

A linear elastic rectangular thin metal sheet has uniform uniaxial tension 100 MPa along its length. Assume plane stress normal to thickness. With E = 200 MPa and Poisson ratio 0.3, find in-plane principal strains.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (C) (0.5, −0.15)

Explanation

Axial strain is $\sigma/E=100/200=0.5$; transverse strain is $-\nu\sigma/E=-0.15$. These are principal strains because shear is zero. **(0.5, −0.15), C**. The printed modulus is 200 MPa; it is not silently changed to GPa.
