The GATE Grind

GATE 2019 CE (CE2) – Question 33

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of roadways: cross-section, sight distance, alignments · 1 mark · Numerical answer

A vehicle travels uphill on +4% grade at 20 m/s. Rolling-friction coefficient is 0.46 and g = 10 m/s². Find horizontal braking distance to reduce speed to 10 m/s (m), to the nearest integer.

Correct answer: 30 to 30

Explanation

Uphill retardation is $a=g(f+G)=10(0.46+0.04)=5$ m/s². From $v^2=u^2-2as$, $s=(20^2-10^2)/(2\times5)=$ **30 m**.
