GATE 2018 CE (CE2) – Question 64

Transportation Infrastructure · Geometric design of roadways: cross-section, sight distance, alignments · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 7.5 m wide two-lane road on plain terrain follows a 510 m radius curve at design speed 100 km/h. Superelevation follows IRC:73-1980 as referred to in the paper. Take g = 9.81 m/s². Outer-to-inner road-edge level difference, to three decimals, is ______ m.

Correct answer: 0.520 to 0.530

Explanation

Design superelevation from the conventional expression is $e=100^2/(225\times510)=0.08715$. Apply the stipulated plain-terrain maximum of 0.07. Road-edge height difference is $7.5(0.07)=0.525$ m.
