GATE 2016 ME (ME3) – Question 32

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Abrasive and non-traditional machining processes · 1 mark · Multiple choice

In a wire-cut EDM process the necessary conditions that have to be met for making a successful cut are that

  1. wire and sample are electrically non-conducting
  2. wire and sample are electrically conducting
  3. wire is electrically conducting and sample is electrically non-conducting
  4. sample is electrically conducting and wire is electrically non-conducting

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) wire and sample are electrically conducting

Explanation

Wire electrical-discharge machining removes material through sparks between the wire and workpiece. Both must provide an electrical conduction path, while the intervening dielectric controls discharges. Thus **both electrically conducting, B**. Mechanical hardness is not the limiting requirement.
