GATE 2014 CS (CS2) – Question 65

Computer Organization and Architecture · Memory Interfacing and Hierarchy · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Eight memory modules share a one-word-wide bus. A write occupies the bus for 100 ns with data, address and control. The addressed module is busy for those 100 ns and 500 ns thereafter. Modules can operate internally in parallel, but only one bus request is active at a time. Find maximum one-word stores initiated in 1 ms.

Correct answer: 10000 to 10000

Explanation

The shared bus accepts one store every100ns, so its bound is10⁶ns/100ns=10000stores. Each memory module remains busy600ns, but cycling through8modules revisits a module only after800ns, allowing full bus utilisation. Thus **10000** stores can be initiated, counting the interval[0,1ms).
