GATE 2026 PI – Question 47

Manufacturing Processes II · Machining · 2 marks · Multiple select

The source prints the minimum-energy orthogonal-machining relation $\phi=C-\alpha/2+\beta/2$, with φ shear angle, α rake angle and β friction angle. Which ONE OR MORE statements are true?

  1. C is constant if shear-plane shear stress is independent of normal stress.
  2. C is constant if shear-plane shear stress depends on normal stress.
  3. C depends on material properties if shear-plane shear stress is independent of normal stress.
  4. C depends on material properties if shear-plane shear stress depends linearly on normal stress.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (A) C is constant if shear-plane shear stress is independent of normal stress.; (D) C depends on material properties if shear-plane shear stress depends linearly on normal stress.

Explanation

With shear strength independent of normal stress, the minimum-energy Merchant model gives a constant angular term C = 45°. If shear strength follows a pressure-dependent relation such as $\tau=\tau_0+k\sigma_n$, the modified angular term depends on the material coefficient k. Thus **A,D** are intended. The printed signs are reversed relative to the standard relation for the stated α,β definitions, $\phi=45^\circ+\alpha/2-\beta/2$; this source inconsistency does not change the choices about C.
