GATE 2026 CE (CE1) – Question 30

Steel Structures · Connections: simple, eccentric, beam-column · 1 mark · Numerical answer

Two steel plates are to be connected together by a 5 mm fillet weld of length 150 mm to transfer a design load. If the size of the fillet weld used to connect the same two plates is changed to 6 mm, the weld length (in mm) needed for transferring the same design load is ______ (*in integer*).

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: 125

Explanation

The strength of a fillet weld is proportional to its throat area, which is proportional to size times length. So $5 \times 150 = 6 \times L$, which gives $L = 125$ mm.
