GATE 2019 ME (ME2) – Question 63

Machining and Machine Tool Operations · Machining operations, machine tools, cutting tools and tool geometry · 2 marks · Numerical answer

A 10 mm drill cuts a through-hole in a 15 mm thick aluminium-alloy plate at feed 0.25 mm/rev and 1200 rpm. Specific cutting energy is 0.7 N·m/mm³. Find drilling power (W), to two decimal places.

Correct answer: 274 to 276

Explanation

Axial feed is $0.25(1200)=300$ mm/min, or 5 mm/s. Removal rate is $(\pi10^2/4)(5)=392.699$ mm³/s. Multiplying by 0.7 J/mm³ gives **274.89 W**.
