GATE 2026 IN – Question 32

Electrical Circuits and Machines · Circuit laws and network theorems · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The potential difference between nodes $A$ and $B$ in a circuit is $v_A-v_B=5\ \mathrm V$. The work done in moving a charge of 1 coulomb from point $B$ to $A$ is ________ J. (Answer in integer.)

Correct answer: 5 to 5

Explanation

The change in potential energy is $\Delta U=q(v_A-v_B)=1\times5=5\ \mathrm J$. This equals the work required from an external agent for quasistatic motion, giving **5 J**.

The electric field does the opposite work, $-5\ \mathrm J$. The official answer uses the work supplied to move the charge.
