  1. $CO_3^{2-}/HCO_3^-$ absent;$OH^-$ present.
  2. $CO_3^{2-}/HCO_3^-$ present;$OH^-$ absent.

Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: (B) $CO_3^{2-}/HCO_3^-$ present;$OH^-$ absent.

Explanation

Colorless phenolphthalein indicates the sample is below its alkaline transition and has no measured phenolphthalein alkalinity. Methyl-orange yellow indicates pH above its acidic transition. In the conventional alkalinity classification, zero phenolphthalein but positive total alkalinity corresponds primarily to bicarbonate, without hydroxide. The best listed choice is **B**,whose carbonate and/or bicarbonate wording includes bicarbonate. Indicator colors alone, without titration, do not quantify each ion.
