GATE 2016 EE (EE2) – Question 30

Power Electronics · DC to DC conversion: Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost Converters · 1 mark · Numerical answer

The ideal buck–boost converter changes a 24 V battery input to 36 V DC at 72 W. It operates at 20 kHz with L=2 mH and output capacitor 1000 μF. Peak voltage across switch S, in volts, is ________.

Correct answer: 59.5 to 60.5

Explanation

For the inverting buck–boost, the off-state switching node is at −36 V relative to input ground. The source side of the open switch remains at +24 V.

Therefore the switch must block the sum of the magnitudes: 24−(−36)=**60 V**. The given power, switching frequency and storage components do not change that ideal blocking-voltage requirement.
