GATE 2014 EE (EE1) – Question 64

Power Electronics · DC to DC conversion: Buck, Boost and Buck-Boost Converters · 2 marks · Numerical answer

Figure (i) shows a chopper. S is switched so diode voltage v_D has waveform (ii). C is large enough for constant capacitor voltage. With ideal switch and diode, find peak-to-peak inductor-current ripple (A).

Correct answer: 2.49 to 2.51

Explanation

The diode-node waveform is100Vfor0.05ms and0Vfor0.05ms, giving duty0.5and period0.1ms. In steady state average inductor voltage is zero, so output voltage is50V. During on-time VL=100−50=50V. Thus ΔIpp=VLton/L=50×50µs/1mH=**2.5A**.
