GATE 2019 EC – Question 34

Analog Circuits · Diode Circuits · 1 mark · Numerical answer

In the circuit shown, $V_s$ is a square wave of period $T$ with maximum and minimum values of 8 V and -10 V, respectively. $R_1=R_2=50\ \Omega$. The average value of $V_L$ is ________ volts (rounded off to 1 decimal place).

Correct answer: -3

Explanation

The ideal diode conducts only when $V_s$ is negative, so then $V_L=\frac{-10\times50}{100}=-5$ V, and when $V_s$ is positive the diode blocks and $V_L=0$. Weighting these two levels by the time spent at each in the waveform gives an average of $-3.0$ V.
